Urban Planning for Dummies – a new and slightly curious addition to the For Dummies series of instructional books. It's a pretty wonky subject to see in the straightforward and simplified style of this series, and raises the instantaneous question many of these books raise: who would actually want to read this?

"Urban Planning for Dummies" is quite good too, but probably unassignable in graduate school.

The College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University has done all sorts of things to promote better planning in Northeast Ohio. And now faculty member Jordan Yin is bringing planning to masses with his new book, "Urban Planning for Dummies". The well-known "Dummies" series may attract snickers, but the books are usually excellent primers about difficult subjects. Yin's book covers the basics of how cities and towns grow and change, how to plan for housing, transportation and land use, how to design greener and more sustainable communities, and how citizens can get involved.

Urban Planning For Dummies is an excellent introduction to the arts and science of urban planning for both the layman and the undergraduate student. It is written in clear prose, comprehensive in nature and a good reference to have close at hand for discussions with the public. The language is simple but does not talk down to the reader, it is full of references and useful internet links.
